So....

Hi.

So... the thing about Asend is... I'm going to hold off on publishing it. Indefinitely. It's not because of issues with the book or because I don't love you guys. Because I do. And this feels really, really mean of me to do right now after telling you it would be out soon. And I really wanted it to be out soon. I did. I still do.

But stuff's going on right now. Not bad stuff. Stuff that's good for me and the Trylle Trilogy in general. Possibly really good stuff. But it means that I need to hold off for now.

I'll explain more if/when things are concrete. But right now, I just have to apologize. I am sorry. I really am.

Ascend will be out at some point. I can promise you that. But I don't know when. And I love you guys.

So... I am sorry. But that's all I can really say for now.

EDIT: Ascend will be out by January 15th.

The day I posted this originally, I was offered a publishing contract for the trilogy. They wanted me to hold off on publishing the third book, but they did offer editing and marketing for the books. I debated on what would be the best course of action. I was aware that I'd made a commitment, but I thought that given the abrupt change of circumstances, I needed to put the book on hold to think about things.

I set the date before the contract was offered. I did not know I would be offered a contract.

I declined the contract, in part because I would have to hold off on publishing Ascend. So Ascend will be out.

But because of the reaction to this situation, I will no longer be announcing the release dates of projects until a few days before they are released. When I hit the button for publish, that's when I'll tell you.

  1. OK, I am really bummed. I have been checking this site, and the Barnes and Noble site daily, hoping it was coming soon. I read the first chapter you posted, and it is sounding amazing! This was going to make my Christmas. I understand things happen, I just thought I would share how disappointed I am! I'll keep my fingers crossed that it won't be too much longer!

  2. We understand, but still can not wait.

  3. Oh Man!! I JUST read the first two in the series and I was so happy when I found out I actually had great timing: the third one was coming out this month, so not long to wait! Now I'm bummed. So no idea at all when you'll be able to publish? a few months? Spring 2011? anything???? lol

  4. Sorry guys. I feel really, really terrible. Hopefully, by January I can at least give you a general idea of when it will be out.

But just to clarify - Ascend definitely will come out. I just don't know the date yet. But it will be out at some point.

And in the long run, this will be a good thing.

  5. Hope you're getting some kind of book deal! You totally deserve it.

  6. I was (still am) really looking forward to it. However, if holding off means things will turn out better for you in the long run then you have to do it. I can guess why this might happen and if it is for that reason I'm so very happy for you. Wow! What a year you have had!

Sorry to hear about your book not being published right now but it sounds like this might be a great thing for you & your series in the long run. Thank you for my book! I really appreciate it.

  15. this sucks! i only started the series because i read that the 3rd book would be released this month. i hate it when i start a series and can't finish it...not to mention i love the trylle trilogy and am more bummed than anything to hear that there is no release date now...that your decision is "indefinite". maybe if you had a more concrete date, it would ease the pain of having to wait. in any case, i hope whatever the reasons are for holding off on releasing the book, that you, Amanda, are okay...cuz we..i mean I wouldn't want anything to happen to you...that would only delay things more! ba ha ha ha.

even though i'm upset, i do appreciate you letting us know.

  21. Amanda's got herself a major publishing deal the way it sounds! Congrats!

  22. Hi Amanda,

congrats if you have just landed yourself a publishing deal, you really really deserve it as I would rate you up there above a lot of other writers who have major deals already! Your stories are very complex and interesting, always leaving us wanting more! I have always been a major Anne Rice fan first and foremost along with Harris, Armstrong, Kane, and I loved Meyer's books once I got past Twilight but I love your writing style more and the Your Blood Approves series is much better than Twilight. I have to say Kudos for the Trylle Trilogy, an ingenious idea and a fantastic un-put-down-able read!
Here's to you getting the recognition you deserve and I will continue to buy your books no matter what.
Just keep writing! xxx Audrey in Ireland

  23. Not gonna lie...so disappointed but if it means that you are getting a deal or something that you deserve then I can wait. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right? Good luck to you and Happy Holidays!

  24. As someone else said; I purchased the other Trylle book because I knew it wouldn't be long for the next.

I'm guessing, too, that you've either got an agent or a publisher in the works--which is great for you.

The hazard of reading Indie Author series--when they're good, they're likely to be published NY or e-Pubs or find an agent.

I'll return to my "do not buy any series til the complete series is published" rule.

    Good luck.

Problem with NY and a lot of e-Pubs is that you can wait YEARS--something I just don't have the patience for.

I've started so many series--and by the time the "next" book comes out--it's been so long, I've forgotten major parts of the story.

Love your books. Best of luck

  25. I, like many of your other readers am sad to hear about the push back of Ascend. BUT, in the same context - if this push back is furthering you in your writing career it's an excellent reason!

Cannot wait for it to come out!

And maybe even a 4th book?! lol

  26. Oh man! I have been checking Amazon everyday for this book! I love the series. I have been so anxiously awaiting it that I can’t even get into any other series or book. I have tried. My mind just gets stuck wondering what is going to happen to Wendy and Finn and what is up with Loki?! I am sooo bummed out about hearing the delay. That was one thing I loved about you, was putting your books up when they are done, FAST TURN AROUND! I just hate to have to wait a year now for anymore of you books.

However, that being said, you are an excellent author and deserve whatever opportunities are coming your way. I am so happy for you and you very much deserve to be on a Best Selling list! And I hope that will come your way if you are going with a publisher.

  27. I agree with k_murray74...my mistake for not waiting until the series was complete. Moving on.

  28. This is so wack. By the time you publish, let's hope I still care about the characters. As a reader yourself, you should know better than to dick us around. If you say Ascend is coming out in December 2010, STICK BY YOUR WORD. Integrity lasts longer than money.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If you chose not read the book that is entirely you choice. And I didn't say the book is not coming never. In fact, it's coming out very soon. And it's not like I decided on whim. "Oh, I told everybody the book will come out today, but for giggles, I'll postpone it." I am very excited to put the book out.

I did not want to upset readers, and I never do. But I have to think about what is best for the books, for readers in the long term, and myself. And I needed time to think.

If you can't continue to care about my characters for an additional week, then I truly did something wrong in writing the book.

    ReplyDelete
  30. To the one who posted about 'Let's hope I still care about the characters' -- If you're a true lover of books, you'd still care about the characters and what has happened in the books so far. No writer, or even reader knows when a new book will come out, if ever and so the hope is there.

Things happen, sometimes it doesn't go the way we want. But we still hope and we still like the series in general. It's not like she was telling us to piss off, she is telling us that in general we will just have to wait and honestly if it'll help the book get better, or allow ME as a READER to enjoy it more when it finally DOES come out then so be it. More power to her for making us wait in the long run.

I'm a new fan, and I just wanted to say I hope it all works out for you Amanda -- Seriously I do and I can't wait to finally read Ascend. Whether it's coming out in the next couple of months or years from now. Keep us posted and good luck to you!

  31. Sorry, Amanda. I wrote the anonymous comment yesterday. I was digging into your books, and connecting with the characters, and when I read your blog post about the postponement, I seethed with what I perceived as your betrayal of fan trust. I'm feeling better about it today and since you took the time to respond to my comment, I want to take the time to apologize.

I've started a few graphic novel series that never panned out, and you may have struck a sore cord there. When I read the word "indefinitely" I think my vision went red. I misunderstood your statement, and didn't realize you meant early 2011. I hope that this plan pans out. Either way, sorry for my internet bashing. I still believe the postponement is wacksauce (b/c patience is not my strength), but I wish you nothing more than all your writer's heart can create. I love your characters. I want to see Loki develop.

Now get to releasing Ascend! LOL.

  32. OK, just totally ruined my New Years. Had finished Trylle #2 yesterday and was so excited that the excerpt at the end indicated a release by the end of 2010. When we had to cancel New Year's plans due to a sick child I consoled myself that at least I could download Ascend to my Kindle. Wrong. Totally bummed out, and changing release dates are a pet peeve. I want to read it but the change combined with the lousy New Year's evening may make me skip it. We'll have to test my resolve ....

  33. Dear Amanda,
You are truly a talented and gifted writer, I think we can all agree on that. It has been sometime that I was unable to put a book down until I finished. Like some others, I only started the series because I read your post that the third in this series would be released soon. My only critique that I have is that I wish you had not made a statement like that unless you were sure of a release date. It's more of a disappointment than anything else. For me it shows a lack of maturity, I'm sorry to say, but there it is. It has no reflection on your talent. Your characters are so loyal and self sacrificing, it's a shame that real life isn't the same. Maybe you have a good reason, maybe you don't, but one thing is for sure quite a number of people feel let down.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Key-

You think the mature thing would be to immediately say "no" to an unexpected offer of a publishing deal that would allow a better quality of books and the ability to concentrate more on writing?

I set a date when I thought I was sure, but I do not control the universe. Things happen that were unexpected.

I do apologize for letting readers down. And I also apologize for being immature and weighing all my options before make a decision. Next time I will be more rash.

  35. I am so in love with this series that I just found a couple of days ago and was heartbroken about the delay. Thank God you edited the post to say it'll be out January 15th. I HOPE I can wait two weeks! Amanda you are wonderful and I wish you luck for all future deals. Kate Bennett

  39. Dear Amanda,
I am sorry for the negative reactions you have received. I think it's a product of living in a culture of immediate gratification. Your talent for writing is a beautiful gift to others, and I know that like any artist, it requires a lot from you. This may sound cheesy, but I just wanted to offer support and encouragement. Readers can be pushy, but you've got to do what's best for you, for your future. No matter when your next book comes out, I can only be thankful for the ones I've been lucky enough to read so far.
I wish you all the inspiration and resources you could ever need.
    Sincerely,
    April B.
