Something You Should Go Out and Buy Right Now

I have been alive along time (nearly 27 years), and in that time, I have seen many things. Some things made me laugh. In fact, lots of things make me laugh, quite a lot. But I have never once laughed as hard as I did back in that fateful night of November 2009.

That is the night I saw RiffTrax Live - a live telecast performance of RiffTrax riffing on Plan 9 From Outerspace in theaters across the country. RiffTrax are three of the fellas from Mystery Science Theater 3000 (namely Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett (Crow T. Robot), and Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo)), and RiffTrax is essentially the exact same thing as MST3K but without the puppets.

When I'm explaining it to you, it sounds stupid. Because basically, it's just three guys talking over a movie. But the fact is, it's really frickin funny.

Anyway - to continue with this story. I've seen many funny things. I have both entire serieses of Monty Python and Kids in the Hall on DVD, as well as having a lot of episodes of Family Guy, Archer, Futurama, and Perfect Strangers on DVD. And I've seen most of the episodes of MST3K.

I've also seen lots of movies. Perhaps as many as 85% of the movies that have come out of America in the past 50 years. I would say that number is close to accurate.

Despite all that, I have never seen anything as funny as RiffTrax LIVE doing Plan 9 From Outerspace. So it was much to my splendid, glorious surprise when Amazon recommended that I buy said performance on DVD. The very show I saw. Available on DVD.

I have just ordered the DVD, so I have not received it yet, and I'm not sure how the live performance looks on DVD. What I do know is that I laughed so much by the end of the night I was literally in pain in my belly. Nothing has ever or will ever be funnier.

So it is what that in mind I strongly urge to rush out and buy yourself a copy. I can't imagine a scenario in which you'd regret it. Buy it: here.

P.S. Johnathan Coulton also performed live that night. So... that's an added bonus. And there's a really funny shorty about being a stewardess. So, it's totally worth it.

  2. This does sound hilarious. I am a huge fan of MST3K and RiffTrax. I used to watch MST3K every Saturday day morning on Syfy as a kid (back when it was Sci Fi).

  3. @Katie Me too! I would get up early to watch on it SciFi. Which was 11 a.m., but I had to set my alarm for it. Anything I'm willing to disturb my sleep for has to be awesome. Or mandatory. Or both.

  4. I looooooove MST3K and RiffTrax, too! When I was about 10 I made my own Tom Servo out of an old gumball machine... I wonder what happened to it...

  5. OMG...I'm going to have to get this. Plan 9 From Outer Space has got to be one of the worst movies ever filmed and a RiffTrax for Mr. Ed Wood's masterpiece would be lolamazing.

  6. Mystery Science Theater! I've heard of that. They made fun of Ed Wood movies. Like going to Rock Horror live show and the whole crowd makes hilarious call-backs, right?

  7. Have you seen the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory one (the Gene Wilder one)? That one was amusing. Funny enough, that was also my first experience watching that film.

Best MST3K for me is Hobgoblins. I've been to two Rifftrax Live but missed Plan 9. Just to let everyone know, they are doing another Rifftrax Live on 8/17 to Jack and the Giant Killer. Looks awesome. I've never laughed so hard as at Rifftrax live.

  15. Oh and for Kids in the Hall fans, they made a new comedy mini series called Death Comes to Town. Sorry if I'm coming off as a PR person. I just love the spread the comedy.

  16. I loooooooooved Kids in the Hall! "You are the sole survivor of a 45 minute delay!"

My favorite MST3K was the Puma Man, by far. "Help I'm falling at a 45 degree angle and breaking all the rules of physics aaaaaaaaaaaaah!" Hahaha, I still crack up!

  17. Amanda, I saw them do Reefer Madness from a local movie theater - it was SO funny. My wife actually walked out to the Love Song from Mystery Science Theater for our wedding.

  18. Ah, Mystery Science Theater! Those two talking heads and a robot does bring back great memories. Back in my college days a group of us would get together and watch it and laugh the night away. Not to mention, the drink or two while watching the movie...ah, the memories!

  19. I'm not sure if you actually go through and read all your comments (or if Eric does), but in case you do, you should check out M.Leighton's blog. I'll include the link for you (or Eric). She has a blog all about you, which is very sweet, and I think you should see it. http://mleightonbooks.blogspot.com/2011/07/something-new-from-amanda-hocking.html#comments

  20. Do you like Cinematic Titanic? Rifftrax is cool and it's neat that they do new movies, but I've always been more of a Joel fan than Mike, and Joel's in Cinematic Titanic along with Trace, Frank, and Mary Jo. Never seen Rifftrax live, but the CT show I saw was a blast!
