You guys, I need your help with something. I can't tell you why yet. But I'm having trouble picking a name. I've narrowed the list down to the names I like best, and I'd like it if you could pick what names you like the most. So... yep. Please vote and let me know what you think!
UPDATE: To help you all make your decision, I'm just going to clarify that the name is NOT for a leading man. So it need not be the "sexiest" choice.
I like Elias despite voting for Noah, but Elias made me think Ezra.
ReplyDeleteVoted!
ReplyDeletevery intriguing! can't wait to hear what we're voting on names for!
ReplyDeletei went with Liam.... don't really know why but that one caught my eye and i kept coming back to it on the list!
ReplyDeleteLol easy - I voted for my son's name :)
ReplyDeleteAxel sounds HOT & mysterious. Liam sounds cute & sweet. So, depending on the character each name has an appeal to me.
ReplyDeleteI like Noah and Oliver the most. Excited to see what this is all about! :)
ReplyDeleteVoted! Looks like Liam is winning for now.
ReplyDeleteLiam is too common. Axel always reminds me of 80s hair metal. I love Rory, but Rory belongs to Doctor Who, so I went with Kasper because I have a friend named Kasper.
ReplyDeleteI like unique names, so Kasper! You don't hear it as often as Liam or oliver..
ReplyDeleteGah, Liam is winning, oh no. It SOUNDS nice, but every Liam I've ever known has been a complete vile sociopath. Unless that's the character you're going for...
ReplyDeleteI can't vote for Liam even though I like the name just cuz my niece named her dog that. Hm. I like Elias and Rory because they sound a little unusual without sounding like they're trying too hard to be unusual.
ReplyDeleteI went for Kasper and Rory as all I can see for Liam is Liam Neeson that big odd looking actor. The others are too much like names that people are naming their babies around here in Alabama. And that Axel reminds me of the Axelrod guy who is some kind of politician, not good.
ReplyDeleteLinus, mainly because I associate the name both with the best of good guys (from Peanuts) and the best of not-so-good guys (from Lost).
ReplyDeleteVoted! The male MC in my WiP is Elias, and a beloved SC from my critique partner's series is Rory, so of course I'm in love with both of them. Good luck- picking names drives me nuts!
ReplyDeleteLiam is my pick from that list :) Loki is my all time fav but that is taken ;)
ReplyDeleteI like Axel because it's not a name you hear that often :). Good luck picking a name, Amanda!
ReplyDeleteElias - too old
ReplyDeleteOliver - too Dickens
Liam - sexy, strong
Erik - Neutral on that one
Axel - hate it for personal reasons, but good for a mean guy
Noah - too Biblical
Simon - too American Idol
Linus - too Snoopy, unless he's a comical guy
Noel - Happy Holidays
Kasper - is he small and pale?
Rory - neutral on that one too
Guess which one I voted for :)
Rory popped out at me at first- it's the strongest one and Kasper-an unusual one aside from our friendly ghost and spelled differently. The softer names- I almost forego Liam as it's kind of an Aiden name-but I voted for it too because it is pretty. And I also love the soft names Noah&Elias because they are not over used- it really depends if this name is for a character or not and what kind of character or perhaps a pet?? Yours truly, Danielle Notaro
ReplyDeleteI voted, but now I am cazy curious. ;)
ReplyDeleteElias overall, but it would really depend on the character. I do agree that Elias needs to be an old soul. :) Erik makes me think of the "Sookie" books, so no. He is taken. Noah if he is amazingly faithful, thank you Nicholas Sparks. :) Noel is too girly. Kasper and Linus could be feminine fellows. Simon is also taken in the City of Glass series. Liam is overused anymore, but I still like it. Axel really could be a bad guy. Rory takes me back to Gilmore girls, where Rory was a girl. Oliver makes me think of Smallville. :) So, I guess if I chose, it would be Elias.
ReplyDeleteHas to be Liam! The stuff of dreams!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to find out either!! I love your books so much!!! Keep writing girlie!
ReplyDeleteI like Noah and Liam... Sexy sexy sexy. I hope they are as sexy as Peter and Jack seem to be in my mind lol!
ReplyDeleteVoted for Liam. Didn't know why until I read June's analysis. It pretty much covers my knee-jerk reactions. Now I worry I was just reacting to pop-culture programming. All those variations on William--Will, Bill, Liam. They all sound strong. Do we still associate that name with The Conqueror?
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I did this poll. I was leaning towards the names Linus & Noel. Haha.
ReplyDeleteElias - not exactly a worn out name so it's one that could have life breathed into it, for better or worse, so this one got a vote
ReplyDeleteOliver - Oliver Twist, Olivia the pig...didn't work for me
Liam- though I love this name for it's strength, it's automatically stuck to an type, plus I can't help thinking of Qui Gon Jin...and he died...so didn't get my vote
Erik - Sookie...that's all I'll say, so not a vote
Axel - This name has been the comedic cop hero and the popular bad boy of rock n roll. The spectrum of opportunity is wide, so yeah, I voted for it
Noah - nice and biblical. Almost got my vote but just didn't feel that interest with it.
Simon - hmmmm...Simon says don't pick me
Linus - will he be playing a piano while Charlie and the rest of the Peanuts gang dance a jig?
Noel - just...no
Kasper - I see it's spelled with a K, but I can't get the friendly ghost out of my head
Rory - uh...hmmm...just...no
Not the lead-ok- Elia-D. Notaro
ReplyDeleteElias- oops
ReplyDeleteI like Linus, but it seems not many others do. My wife hated it too. But it does mean "poet."
ReplyDeleteI have two sons, named Oliver and Liam, so that was an easy choice! :)
ReplyDeleteI used Liam on a very minor character. Tired of it.
ReplyDeleteLiam and Rory are both good strong Celtic names. Rory is getting a lot of interest right now thanks to Rory on Dr Who. Either one would work well
ReplyDeleteElias. Less common the better. When I saw "Liam" I couldn't stop thinking of Angel.
ReplyDeleteI like Oliver. I am intrigued now. Can't wait to find out what you are writing.
ReplyDeleteSince you are a big Dark Knight fan, I wanted to recommend a fantastic movie I saw yesterday with Tom Hardy called Warrior. As you know he is playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. He was incredible in this movie. If you have not seen it yet, go see it. It's fabulous.
Kasper is a variant of Gaspar or Caspar: origins are Persian, means "he who guards the treasure". depends on what you need it for but if it's not a leading character, I would let the meaning of the name do it's thing...
ReplyDeleteNoel means Christmas and Linus means Flax...
ReplyDeleteElias is a name that is a bit quirky but doesn't shout - trendy. Oliver and Liam are nice but will these people ever be really mature?
ReplyDeleteRory has always been one of my favorite names - makes me think of Rory Gallagher, an awesome musician. I also love the name Axel...big crush on Axel Rose. Yeah, I seem to relate everything to music.I'm weird like that.
ReplyDeleteI'm disappointed in all of you for not listing Rory Culkin as a reason to pick Rory. He is the third best Culkin, you know.
ReplyDeletePicked Oliver because of Olivier Martinez even though you said they needn't be sexy.
ReplyDeleteElias should be a leading man's name so I DID NOT vote for tha name. Please consider it for another story!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for pointing out that blog post -- it's always interesting to hear the writer's thoughts like that.Register Website
ReplyDeleteYou just said sexy... I'm thinking bad ass sexy LOL definitely axel
ReplyDeleteI'm with Danielle, Liam is too common. Go to any park and call out that name and you'll get as many turned heads as if you had said, "Aidan." Elias is brilliant, but leading man, yes. So my vote stands as Kaspar and Linus. I wanted to name my baby Linus because it is a family name and my grandfather freaked -- hates that part of his name and then, sure enough, I now have a nephew with the middle name Linus. Oh. . he's got a good name. They call him Lio, but it's Orelio.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Brycen? That is an awesome name. Cole ia another good one. Thanks for the chance to put my 2cents in
ReplyDeleteI have an 8 y/o son named Liam, so of course I love that name, but I've also read a handful of YA books recently with the male character named Liam, so I think it's becoming a "thing." Anyway, I voted for Oliver. Love it!
ReplyDeleteLiam was the only name that popped out at me when I read the list.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read a Rory in ages. I think good names should be recycled.
ReplyDeleteMy cat is named Rory. Short for Aurora.
ReplyDeleteIsn't there a werewolf named Axel in some popular vampire series?
ReplyDeleteSoooooooooomebody's having a baby, eh? :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of Liam all I can think of is Charlie's strung out brother on Lost. Bleh. I voted Oliver, it's so cute. Can't wait to see what this name is going into!
ReplyDeletePlease don't use Liam!
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of this slimy kid that I hate! All I can think of is a little snobby kid. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT use that name.
Oh, and Linus is pretty bad too.
But don't use Liam.
Then again, this is your choice. But I'm serious, NO LIAM. Unless he's an annoying little kid that dies in the end. =)
I picked Noah and Erik. (Although I prefer Eric spelled with a "C")
ReplyDeleteElias is good, too. (Not exactly sure how to say that...)
But just go with easy names to say. And good luck with your project!
I think June's name analysis above is on target, except for Liam. I also find that Liam is slightly overused as "ktgirl83" points out.
ReplyDeleteI voted for Rory. Hope it helps. Good luck.
Oliver--It doesn't sound like a girl's name (Rory), isn't "look at me, look at me", and yet is nice and dependable--and memorable.
ReplyDelete-S.
Maybe we could know a little about this personality of this character so we choose the right name to fit him?
ReplyDeletei thought Elias.Erik,Axel, Kasper sounded like strong leading man names.Did not like Linus reminds me of something but can`t think what.
ReplyDeleteHey there! I think it would be best to name him based on his personality compared to the stereo typed vision of that character for that name. For instance, With Simon I think of Simon from Lord of the flies - was wise beyond his time which led him to meet a tragic end Or Simon from American Idol, Despised by some, but secretly loved by others. If the character has that kinda personality name him as such. (hope this doesn't sound too much like character thievery, but I love it when I see nods to classic characters in life and lit)
ReplyDeleteThere are two also char names that I can't think of another character for which may be good if your looking for unpredictability that's Elias and Rory, although I voted for Noah
I picked Rory. Here's why:
ReplyDeleteElias - Not overused. My #2 choice.
Oliver - Famous char named Oliver Twist, no.
Liam - Famous actor named Liam, no.
Erik- Solid name. My #3 choice.
Axel - Too Guns & Roses, too Axelrod, no.
Noah - Is the char a ship's captain? ;) No.
Simon - "Hello, my name is Simon." Too SNL, no.
Linus - Famous cartoon char named Linus, no.
Noel - Famous holiday named Noel, no. Maybe Joel?
Kasper - Famous ghost named Casper, no.
Rory - Nice, solid, Britishy name. Not overused. My #1 pick. And no, I'm not British. :)
I voted for Liam, like the majority. It sounds like a good name for a supporting character.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to learning how this turns out!
So...looks like I'm the only male that voted. I picked Liam. It's a good name, fairly unique and strong sounding.
ReplyDeleteOliver's kind of a sissy name (no offense to any Olivers out there), Linus sounds whiny, Noel sounds like a woman, and Kasper is a woman's name too (might be good for a strong lesbian character?). Just some thoughts from a guy's perspective. :)
Linus sounds good for me..
ReplyDeleteI choose Erik because it is a generic name. This allows for you to to let the character to develop in any which way you want, without being constrained by the expectations people will have for a more uniquely named person. In a nut shell Erik could be anyone you want him to be. If this is a name for a side character and not a protagonist then you might want to keep it tame, so as to not over shadow you heroine/hero. I know if I were reading and I saw a name like Liam my brain would pull that character from the background to the foreground. I would probably spend a little to much time thinking about this unique sounding character then the author intended.
ReplyDeleteSo stoked that my favorite men's name is in the lead!
ReplyDeleteEric is generic... Erik is not. Erik says 'no matter how mild I may appear, I am descended from ass-kicking Vikings, and don't you forget it.'
Amanda, you crack me up! I changed my vote to Rory based on your "third best Culkin" comment (I love the Culkins too -- and in the same order as you do!). My first vote was for Axel but I changed it after reading others' comments (it does sorta sound like Axelrod). Liam, Erik or Noah are ok. The others are a no for me.
