Book Birthday!

Today was the day that Switched came out in bookstores. Here are some pictures of Switched in bookstores:

That's J. L Bryan's son John.

David Dalglish bought a girlie book.

Her husband made her the fancy shirt.

Those are my cousin's kids, Leyton and Miley, standing in front of my book.

That's my BFF Pete with my book at Walmart, You may recognize her as the original cover model for the first edition of Switched. So it's all come full circle.
I also did a book signing in New Jersey at Barnes & Noble. Thanks to everybody who turned out! It was a fun time.

That's what I look like when I sign my name at the Princeton, NJ Barnes & Noble.

Now I'm in the hotel room with Eric, eating sushi and watching What's Your Number? starring Anna Faris and Chris Evans even though Eric doesn't really like Chris Evans but I do, ever since I saw Not Another Teen Movie. (Also, did you see Chris Evans in Captain America? Him as a little guy, that was CGI, but when he was buff, he was really that friggin buff. That was crazy, right?)

So that was what my book looks like in stores. If you haven't picked up a copy yet, you should. And if you have, thank you! And if you've read the short story, you should tell me what you think about it!

Tomorrow, hopefully, I'll post more interesting things. But right now, I'm sleepy, and Chris Evans is half naked on the TV, so think I'm heading off. But thanks for making it a great book birthday!

  10. Congrats Amanda! I still have an email you sent me when you were just beginning putting your stories on Amazon. I really look up to you because you have such character and wouldn't let anyone hold you back. I'm an aspiring author, and I hope to accomplish what you have. I have all your books on Kindle, but I want to go buy the hard copy as well.

Congrats and good luck in your future.

  11. This is great! Kudos. LOVED Chris Evans in Capt. America. It reminded me of my husband's uncle who I only know through scrapbooks and pictures as he was killed in Guadalcanal. What I really liked was when Evans' character, Steve Rogers, as the little guy says he doesn't want to kill anyone, he just doesn't like bullies.
I blogged about it at http://wingedeffigy.blogspot.com/2011/08/our-familys-captain-america.html

  14. Congratulations! I am proud to say that I DO remember your best friend from the original cover image and I have cherished each and every one of your books!

In fact, prior to reading your books and becoming aware of your commercial success, I had shelved my most cherished manuscript, too fearful to actually finished it despite my total obsession, because I was increasingly pessimistic about whether it would ever be possible for the world to see it's quirky little face.

You reminded me that I had nothing to lose except for my beloved characters and the entire universe that I had created for myself, on top of the joy I get from writing. Thank you for that.

I know you put a lot of work into promoting your books on book blogs and asking writers and bloggers that you respected to do reviews. My manuscript is only 75% finished and what I do have has only been edited once, but..

If you, or any of your adoring fans for that matter, would ever have the time to review at least the first chapter or two and provide constructive criticism, it would mean the WORLD to me.

It has already received multiple positive reviews and I have been on the "Writers to Watch" list at

  15. At writers cafe twice in the past week. At any rate, the working title is "Laidy Mars and Her Adventures Elsewhere," and my name connects to My writers cafe profile.

Thank you again for your inspiration, wit, and talent. I look forward to stopping by B&N and grabbing my first ever physical book by Amanda Hocking!!

  17. Congrats! Your story of self-publishing (and hoping that someone sees/reads your books) and becoming the published author and success you are today is inspiring.

I happen to be an aspiring author, myself, writing mainly short stories. As I write, I find your blog and your story as a huge motivation. That seeing if you put in the hard work, you can get somewhere. Seeing where you came from gives a lot of not-yet-published authors hope.

Because of you, I began blogging (I know, shameless plug-- rwmorici.blogspot.com ) And I actually self-published for the first time on Amazon/Kindle. But, my point being, I would've never thought about pursuing writing in this fashion if it weren't for you.

Thanks and hope you have continued success.

  18. Congratulations! You have so much to be proud of! You're the first one who introduced me to self-publishing and I'm so thankful for that. Yes, it's a lot of work, not easy to get the name out there, but we all start somewhere. I always look back to you older posts when you were just beginning and that keeps me going.
Thank you for being an inspiration!

  22. Having a book published and sold is my dream, so congrats! I can't even imagine the feeling of walking into a bookstore, where I used to spend my entire childhood, and picking up the novel I myself wrote. .___.

  23. Wow Amanda! You did a book signing at Princeton, NJ Barnes & Noble! It must be an amazing feeling to be signing books in an actual bookstore, because I know that would be a dream for me. I just started getting into self-publishing as a horror author and it's mainly thanks to you. In the world of self-publishing you are a hero to those who seek to make their works known.

  31. Just heard your interview on All Things Considered on NPR. Glad you still sound like the sweet but smart daughter of the prairie that you are. Success will not change you because you are so grounded, Amanda. Safe journey. Looking forward to seeing you around Austin when you return.

  35. I was just watching that movie the other day too, and wondered if he was the same one in Captain America. I like him. The movie? Ehhhhh, not so sure on that one. :-) I heard about your book online, but was somehow under the impression that it was already released before this year? A little confused but looking forward to picking it up!

  37. Yes, I do DVR Anderson every day, so that's how I found you. I haven't had the opportunity to read your books yet, since it is 3:17am, but as soon as I get a chance, I will. I think your story is very inspiring. I've also considered becoming a writer over the years, but never took the time to do it. Now that I'm unemployed, I have no excuse. Anyway, I'm gonna get back to you as soon as I read your first book. Thanks for never giving up!
