Show & Tell Giveaway - Journals

While planning for Under the Seapalooza, I was trying to come up with some fun ideas for things to and asked for input. Nikki Jefford (author of Entangled and the awesome guest post & giveaway, which you should check out: here) came up with the idea for weekly "Show & Tell" memes.

Here's how it works:

Unlike ongoing meme’s, this one is temporary - every Thursday throughout the month of Under the Seapalooza. Each week, I'll show off my favorite something (this week it's bookmarks), then you show off your favorite thing and enter to win a prize.

This is the schedule for Show & Tell Thursdays:
July 25th - Bookmarks
August 2nd - eReader Skins
August 9th - Journals
August 16th - Book Trailers

This week, it's journals. With blogging and other online journals, hand written journals probably aren't as popular as they once were. But there's something about putting pen to paper that I can't resist. It's more active, more personal, and far more private than anything on the internet.

All my books start out on paper, with my writing down ideas in notebooks or journals. In the beginning, it's usually just a setting or a character name, along with many doodles, but eventually it grows into a full blown outline.

I journaled every day from middle through high school, but now I only journal sporadically. Still, it's something that I enjoy doing, and it's helpful when I want to vent or work something out in my head.

Right now, I use a lot of Five Star Notebooks. I know, it's not exciting at all, but I've kinda obsessed with Five Star for years, and now I'm stuck on them. They're the only notebook I've used since I was like 13, and I feel like if I change now, it might ruin everything.

Here's my current journal:
It's kinda boring, so I made Sophie be in the picture to spice it up.

So what about you? Do you use an old notebook? A fancy covered journal? Or do you use Microsoft Word?

Whether you love journalling or not, here's your chance at winning one of two awesome journals that will hopefully inspire all your creative juices.

The first one is this fantastic "under the sea" inspired journal from Nikki Jefford. (Thanks again, Nikki!)

The second one is a cool journal that I chose because it reminded me of Daniel from Wake.

Enter in the Rafflecopter below to win one of the journals. All Show & Tell Giveaways will run until August 25th. It's open to the US & Canada only, sorry.

Thanks again to Nikki Jefford for coming up with such a fun idea!

  1. How many Five Star journals do you think you have from all of these years of journaling in them?

I feel as if I have traveled a bell curve or something with my journaling habits! I started in middle school also, if we don't count the random "journals" I had in elementary school which my grandma saved, and I spent many years using basic composition notebooks. I then graduated to spiral bound notebooks, as I am left handed and the binding on the composition books often got in my way.

I then began using Livejournal once my family was certain that the site wasn't a millpond of sexual predators -- I am very gullible and lacked friends, after all -- and then moved onto the blog function of MySpace.

I now depend on my blog, but this has proven difficult because I am an aspiring author and I have had to learn not to air my dirty laundry online in a way that would compromise my reputation if anyone ever reads my books.. And making "private" posts on my blog feels like cheating somehow.. So here I am, 25 years old and back to a basic composition book that I found while moving before my wedding this Saturday!

It's a total Lion King "circle of life" moment! Going analog, so to speak, has reminded me how much privacy we all once had before the Internet! :)

Looking forward to the tour date my new husband and I will be coming to! Travel safe and I hope you meet tons of cool fans!

  2. My journal is a black A4-format book. In it I just write about things that irritate me and I write down important things that happend, so I'll never forget them. With it I can clear my mind.

  3. My journals are mainly Diamond Composition books of varying colours including black (mostly), yellow, green and a few with images like Hanna Montana. It's good to write things down and like Elle says it clears your mind.

  4. I am currently using a black composition notebook I got at Target and a tiny notebook that goes in my purse. However, I have many other journals. I have a small tote filled with five star notebooks, some composition notebooks, a spiral bound notebook with a pink filigree design from B&N bargains, a Steampunk journal that I got at a convention, a spiral bound journal that has cartoon monsters all over it back when I worked in Borders. On my desk, there is a dollar tree desk organizer filled with mini notebooks that I put in my purse. I also just got a tablet which I use the Writer app for. Oi, I need to set up my own school supply store. ^_^

  5. I use composition notebooks as well, usually buy them once the school supplies go half off! I loved them because the cardboard was harder than most notebooks and I could easily write in them anywhere. Lately though they are being made cheaper.

I also tend to throw on a few stickers to liven them up a bit!

  6. My current journal is a smaller notebook that has leopard print on it and the binding is like a red velvet type of material! I like to try and buy cute ones so it makes me feel happy to write in plus it looks cute on my bedside table!

  7. I have been journaling FOREVER and right now I'm using a thin, teal covered snakeskin journal that somewhat compares to a Moleskine. I like the slimmer models for personal journaling. For writing notes, however, I use Five Star like you!

  10. Love, love, love journals. My favorites are moleskins that I have reached as gifts but I usually buy them as cheap as I can find as I use a lot.

  11. I have a new favorite journal every time I finish one, and a few waiting in the wings. I have hundreds but I've been journaling for over 20 years.

  12. I didn't journal regularly until I was older. Now I use the computer, but I also have a few beautiful journals that I enjoy writing in. My latest is covered in sari fabric. I also like the look of composition notebooks.

  13. My journal is one I ordered from the All Time Low store. It's kind of lame, but 1. I love ATL & 2. Holds the thoughts of some really import moments of my life (well this one started when I started college).

  14. I have always wrote in journals. I tried once to use a journal program my dad had given me for the computer but it just wasn't the same. Sometimes I use notebooks but I have a weakness for pretty journals that I see in stores. I love going back and reading them from when I was six, I can honestly say that I was a naughty child lol I have so many entries from the age of 7-10 where I wrote about acting sick and tricking my parents into letting me stay home from school! Right now I am using a notebook as a journal but my last one was really pretty. The cover had like a rubber covering that was a deep pink and then it had blue dragonflies all over it.

  15. I think notebooks are better than PC, at least a notebook doesn't run out of battery at the right moment when inspiration is overflowing. In these notebooks I just write my stories, not my life. I could never write about me.

  16. It more of a notpad. Its bright yellow with a green worm and it says 'bookworms do it literally." Heres a pic! http://www.facebook.com/samantha.deen.7#!/photo.php?fbid=4363327008912&set=a.2320318294971.2132738.1459970158&type=1

  17. I used to use a mead notebook. Now I'm using the diary function on my phone. I should probably get back into handwritten writing again!

  18. I'm not really a fan of writing in journals online so I like using those common composition notebooks, the one's that are black with white splotches all over. I recently got one that's just all black and what made it even more awesome was that it's flexible. So now I don't have to worry about pages falling out or the cardboard ripping. And I'll be using that journal for all the ideas I have. It's a slow process right now, but I'm getting there. But the one's in the giveaway are awesome looking! Especially the Daniel inspired one. :) Thanks for throwing such awesome events!

  19. I used to have those black/white marble notebooks all over the place! I occasionally still use them, but I try to treat myself to a new moleskin when I can - they have some really cool themed ones now too (Lego, Peanuts, Star Wars) - way cooler than designing my own covers on the marbles, lol!

  20. I dont have one at the moment. I'd love to start keeping one.

  21. My current journal is a smaller spiral notebook. I haven't had a really cool journal in a long time. I usually use whatever's laying around.

  22. My current journal isn't really a journal at all..I most write short stories in it, weight loss goals and small notes for longer stories. I've tried talking about my daily life...but that's kind of boring so...lol XD

It's nothing really. I put my nickname across it with scrapebook letters and found some old stamps with pictures of animals on it and placed that on it as well. Lol I love it though. : )

  24. I have two journals (well, and a notebook to record interesting findings and bits of overheard conversations, but that's a different matter altogether) one was given to me by my aunt, because she figured all teenage girls needed a journal to hide under their mattress. It is very pink and has a squishy cover, like a cushion. I use that for general angst. The other is little, spiral bound, and has one of those papyrus covers. There's a fairy and a half moon on the cover. That's my dream journal, but I has weird, oddly detailed dreams that just beg to be written down.

  25. i been writing and sketching in m journals since i was 14. I am now 31 years old and i actually kept them all. 29. My current journal is a word document. There's really nothing special to it. But before that it was one of the Twilight journals.

  30. Used 3 -5 subject notebooks for journaling when growing up but I don't currently have a personal journal. Using an engagement calendar to record my children's special moments each day. Notes on my iphone keep my story ideas. These two journals would be perfect to get me started again. Beautiful books!
