|My dog Isley looking adoringly at Mike|
I live in Minnesota with my dog, three cats, and my fiance, Mike. I used to live in Austin, a.k.a. SPAMTown, USA. They invented SPAM here, and the town is quite proud of it. (Here's a vlog with a fun tour of the SPAM museum: here.) But I recently moved to Rochester, which isn't that far away from Austin, and that's good because I couldn't ever be that far from my best friend/assistant/viceroy, Eric.
I do many things, most of them lame and boring, but the thing I get paid to do is write young adult books.
All three books in my Trylle Trilogy - Switched, Torn, and Ascend - were originally self-published, but were re-released with St. Martin's and Pan Macmillan internationally with new bonus content in early 2012. The trilogy has also made the USA Today Bestseller list, the New York Times Bestseller list, and was recently optioned for a film by Media Rights Capital with District 9 screenwriter Terri Tatchell adapting the books for screen.
Watersong was released with St. Martins's and Pan Macmillion, and they recently acquired my newest trilogy, the Kanin Chronicles, which should be out this year. My zombie series, The Hollows, has been adapted into a graphic novel by Dynamite.
I also enjoy Red Bull, Jim Henson, Batman, Jane Austen, Star Wars legos, and I absolutely hate long walks on the beach out of my intense fear/hatred of wet sand
My favorite authors are Kurt Vonnegut, Chuck Palahniuk, Bret Easton Ellis, Alan Moore, and J. D. Salinger, but I don't write anything like them.
I have an obsession with River Phoenix, and I've seen Silence of the Lambs more than any other movie, even The Dark Knight. I'm pretty sure I've seen every American movie that came out between 1980 and 1990, and I've loved them all. My favorite movies are The Dark Knight, Labyrinth, Up, My Own Private Idaho, Pretty in Pink, Empire Strikes Back, Back to the Future II, The Crow, and American Psycho.
|I also make collages, like this one.|
I listen to a lot of music, but Silverchair, Ryan Adams, Elliott Smith, blink 182, Fall Out Boy, the Beatles, and Led Zepplin are never too far from any of my playlists. My favorite song ever is "Wonderwall" by Oasis. I'm also crazy about film scores, particularly Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, John Williams, Clint Mansell... and about a million others. I'm currently listening to a lot of Florence + the Machine, Death Cab for Cutie, Duran Duran, and Cobra Starship. I don't know what dubstep is, and I refuse to believe it's a real thing.
If I were trapped on a deserted island, the one thing I'd take with me would be a boat capable for taking me home.
I'm also the guitarist in a band called the Fraggin Aardvarks, and even though its twice as cool as it sounds, we haven't had a practice in like two years, so I'm not sure that technically we are still a band. But we never broke up, and it's an awesome thing to tell people, so I'm sticking with it. (We even had a synethesizer!)
