About Me

I live in Minnesota with my dog, three cats, and my husband, Mike and my stepson, Gavin. I used to live in Austin, a.k.a. SPAMTown, USA. They invented SPAM here, and the town is quite proud of it. (Here's a vlog with a fun tour of the SPAM museum: here.) But I recently moved to Rochester, which isn't that far away from Austin, and that's good because I couldn't ever be that far from my best friend/assistant/viceroy, Eric.

Here's an obligatory picture from my wedding day
I do many things, most of them lame and boring, but the thing I get paid to do is write young adult books.

All three books in my Trylle Trilogy - Switched, Torn, and Ascend - were originally self-published, but were re-released with St. Martin's and Pan Macmillan internationally with new bonus content in early 2012. The trilogy has also made the USA Today Bestseller list, the New York Times Bestseller list, and was recently optioned for a film by Media Rights Capital with District 9 screenwriter Terri Tatchell adapting the books for screen.

My young adult four-book series Watersong was released with St. Martins's and Pan Macmillion, and they're also releasing my newest trilogy the Kanin Chronicles. The first book Frostfire is out now, with Ice Kissed coming out May 5, 2015, and the final book Crystal Kingdom will be out August 4, 2015.  My zombie series, The Hollows, has been adapted into a graphic novel by Dynamite.

By the end of 2015, I will have published five different series, with a total of 20 different published works. For those of you that want a list, here it is:

I also enjoy Red Bull, Jim Henson, Batman, dinosaurs, sharks, Jane Austen, Star Wars legos, and I absolutely hate long walks on the beach out of my intense fear/hatred of wet sand

Some of favorite authors include: Kurt Vonnegut, Alan Moore, Sylvia Plath, Neil Gaiman, Richelle Mead, Anne Rice, Claudia Gray, Stephen King, and Holly Black.

My favorite movies are The Dark Knight, Labyrinth, Up,  Pretty in Pink, Empire Strikes Back, Back to the Future II, Aliens, Jaws, Bladerunner, and Ghostbusters. My favorite actors are Michael Caine, Anjelica Huston, Sam Rockwell, and Jessica Lange. (I also love Tom Hardy, because how can I not?)

My heroes include John Hughes, Jim Henson, and Batman. A Midsummer Night's Dream is my favorite play, and I want to watch it all the time.

I listen to a lot of music, but Silverchair, Ryan Adams, blink 182, Fall Out Boy, the Beatles, and Led Zepplin are never too far from any of my playlists. My favorite song ever is "Wonderwall" by Oasis. I'm also crazy about film scores, particularly Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, John Williams, Clint Mansell... and about a million others. I'm currently listening to a lot of Florence + the Machine, Death Cab for Cutie, INXS, and Cobra Starship.

If I were trapped on a deserted island, the one thing I'd take with me would be a boat capable for taking me home.

I'm also the guitarist in a band called the Fraggin Aardvarks, and even though its twice as cool as it sounds, we haven't had a practice in like two years, so I'm not sure that technically we are still a band. But we never broke up, and it's an awesome thing to tell people, so I'm sticking with it. (We even had a synethesizer!)
